Until recently, New Zealand's spectacular Clutha River was threatened by four hydro dams proposed by Contact Energy, at Tuapeka Mouth, Beaumont, Queensberry and Luggate. This website remains active as a reminder that our New Zealand rivers are still not safe from commercial exploitation.

Reservoir sedimentation has raised the river bed at Alexandra, causing serious flooding. The only permanent solution is to decommission the Roxburgh dam.
The Hurunui Dambusters
There are currently several major dam and water abstraction proposals well underway on the Hurunui river system to support the short-term 'cash cow' of dairy farming. This fantastic fishing and environmental resource is under major threat and will change forever if these structures are realized. Your support will help us convey to the authorities, here and in Wellington, the importance of this issue to the people of Canterbury and New Zealand.
Save The Wairau
The Wairau River is the life source of Marlborough. Save The Wairau was founded to advocate for the long-term sustainability of this internationally important braided river. They are working to protect the natural character, integrity, form, functioning and resilience of the Wairau River system. They aim to protect the Wairau River as a cultural, educational and recreational resource for the benefit of the community and for future generations.
Orari River Protection Group
The Orari River is in mid-Canterbury. It is threatened by a proposed dam for an irrigation scheme, which would destroy the natural character of the river. This group is working to prevent any degradation of the Orari River.
